Smith Presentation Highlights College's Black History Month Kickoff
WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College kicked off its Black History Month celebration Jan. 29 with a program in the Craig F. Goess Student Center that featured remarks from motivational speaker Kemba Smith. Before a full house in the Goess Center's multipurpose room, Smith detailed a turbulent time in her life that began soon after she enrolled for classes at Hampton State University. Smith explained that she got in with the wrong crowd in an effort to 'fit in' with her new environment and trouble ensued.
She began dating a drug dealer and as a result of her connections with him, she was arrested, convicted and sentenced to 24.5 years in prison. After serving 6.5 years of that sentence, she was granted clemency in 2000 and released.
